Local governments fall under federal DOT regulations for random
drug testing of safety-sensitive positions. Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations require most employers to establish drug and alcohol testing programs for certain employees who work in a safety sensitive position in their work. The purpose of the program is to help prevent accidents and injuries resulting from the misuse of alcohol or controlled drugs. If your city has an employee(s) who work in a safety sensitive position and are covered under the DOT regulations you must enroll them in a drug and alcohol testing program. DATA can help. The Drug and Alcohol Testing Alliance of Iowa (DATA) provides services that assist local government employers in complying with federally mandated drug and alcohol testing requirements. By pooling many local government employers under one program, cost savings and administrative efficiencies are achieved. You can enroll in DATA by downloading this form. |
